IRAQ: THIRD NIGHT AIR OFFENSIVE ON IRAQ
English/Nat A series of thunderous explosions rocked Baghdad before dawn Saturday as U-S and British forces pressed a punishing air offensive on Iraq for a third night. Reporters on Baghdad rooftops saw fiery streaks from what appeared to be Tomahawk cruise missiles speeding across the sky in descending arcs and landing in giant fireballs. The sound of warheads exploded a few seconds late, lighting the pre-dawn horizon in red glow that silhouetted palm trees against the dark sky. Iraqi anti-aircraft gunners on roof-tops opened fire, filling the sky with booms and bright red flashes. Bright orange tracer bullets streaked across the night sky. When the attack ended, ambulances or fire trucks with sirens blaring were heard speeding away. Officials, who must escort journalists wishing to tour the city, refused to take them to the targeted areas. The attack appeared the most severe and dramatic on Baghdad since U-S and British forces began airstrikes early on Thursday to punish Iraq for its alleged obstruction of U-N weapons inspectors searching for the country's weapons of mass destruction. Before Saturday's attack, the United States fired nearly 300 Tomahawk cruise missiles from ships in the Gulf or by B-52 bomber aircraft. The missiles carry warheads of up to 3-thousand pounds (1,365 kilograms). Iraq says 25 people have been killed and 75 injured in the first two nights. Saturday's explosions were not preceded by air raid sirens, implying that for the first time the strikes eluded Iraqi air defence. When the reverberations from the explosions subsided at about 4:45 a.m. (0145 GMT), the winter air filled with the sounds of muezzins' call from mosque loudspeakers, informing Muslims to eat their last meal before beginning the first day of fasting for the holy month of Ramadan. Clerics declared the start of Ramadan after sighting the moon on Friday, the 29th day of the preceding month, Shaaban. The Pentagon reported on Friday that initial bomb-damage assessments indicate only a small number of the targets were destroyed or severely damaged even though Iraq offered virtually no resistance. For example, of 27 Iraqi surface-to-air missile facilities attacked, only one was destroyed and eight suffered no damage. The Iraqi military claimed its anti-aircraft batteries had shot down 77 incoming missiles so far. T/I: 10:34:42 SADDAM STILL IN CHARGE Iraq/Kuwait Natsot Duration: 3.52" Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has ruled Iraq for more than 16 years. The 58-year-old Arab joined the Iraqi Ba'th Party in 1957, and two years later, fled to Cairo as a poltical refugee after participating in an attempt to assassinate President Abdul Karim Qasim. He returned to Iraq in 1963 when the Ba'th Party came to power. But after the party was ousted by the Nasserites in 1964, Saddam was arrested after participating in a failed coup attempt against President Abdul Salam Aref. The party regained power in 1968, and Saddam took charge of the secret security apparatus. He eventually joined the Revolutionary Command Council, Iraq's highest governing body, gradually becoming the second man after President Ahmad Hassan el-Bakr, to whom he was related. In the late 1970s, el-Bakr became a nominal president as Saddam became the real ruler. In July 1979, el-Bakr handed over the presidency and party leadership to Saddam, who consolidated his grip on power by brutal repression. In 1980, the Iraqi army attacked Iran, beginning an eight-year war in which one million Iraqis and Iranians were killed. In August 1990, Saddam Hussein's army invaded Kuwait, sparking the Gulf War and the defeat of Iraq by the Western Allies. Saddam has clung onto power despite the and international sanctions which are still in effect against Iraq. Natural Sound The U-S - backed by Britain - has launched a series of military strikes on Iraq and at least one missile has fallen near President Saddam Hussein's biggest palace in the capital. President Saddam Hussein said several targets had been struck. In a statement carried by the official Iraqi News Agency, the president accused the U-S of cowardice for using long-range missiles instead of fighting face-to-face. He also urged Iraqis to \"fight the enemies of God, enemies of the nation, enemies of humanity\". \"God will be on your side and disgrace will be theirs, now and on the day of the judgement\", the statement added. Iraqi officials two people were killed in the air attacks, while 30 others were wounded. The first indication of the attack came when a barrage of anti-aircraft fire lit up the night sky at 2149 GMT on Wednesday, unleashing thunderous explosions and shaking windows of buildings. The capital was shaken again by a second round of explosions from the anti-aircraft guns at 2200 GMT. Baghdad was hit again at 2329 GMT and the fourth time at 0100 GMT. All attacks lasted less than a minute. Television pictures monitored outside the country showed explosions on the ground in the distance. A fiery glow spread over the horizon. Anti-aircraft guns firing from roof tops let loose volley after volley of shots, creating orange traces. The Information Ministry said it planned to take reporters to see the damage caused by one missile in the Karada neighbourhood. Karada is across the Tigris river from the Old Presidential Complex in central Baghdad. It is not clear if the palace has been damaged. A second missile hit another neighbourhood in Baghdad, but its exact location could not immediately be confirmed. According to medical staff at one Baghdad hospital, five people have been killed and 30 injured, many with burning and shrapnel wounds, in the attack. But total casualties are still not known. In all, there had been fives waves of air strikes on the Iraqi capital, lasting six hours. As midday (0900 GMT) approached, there were no signs of more strikes in Baghdad. The attack capped a day of swift developments that began with more than 100 U-N weapons inspectors leaving Baghdad for Bahrain on the orders of their boss, UNSCOM chairman Richard Butler. A few hours earlier, Butler had submitted a report to U-N Secretary- General Kofi Annan, accusing Iraq of obstructing the inspectors despite a November 14 pledge to provide full cooperation. That pledge had averted a U-S attack on Iraq at the last moment. U-S officials said Operation Desert Fox would be a four-day operation designed to strike key Iraqi military units and Saddam Hussein's ability to produce weapons of mass destruction. Iraq in October 2004
(6 Apr 2005) original story: G00436 Iraq in October Margaret Hassan, the director of the CARE International' charity in Iraq, was kidnapped on her way to work in Baghdad in late October. Hassan, an Irish-born woman married to an Iraqi man, Tahseen Ali Hassan, had lived and worked in Iraq for thirty years. Militants in Iraq had kidnapped more than 150 foreigners by this time, and many non-governmental organisations had withdrawn foreign staff because of the bombings and kidnappings. CARE suspended operations in Iraq on Wednesday after she was seized. Tahseen Ali Hassan said that he had not been contacted by the kidnappers and had no idea who was holding his wife. He urged the group to let her go, saying she was an Iraqi by marriage and had done nothing but help the country. In a series of video's released by her captors she was seen to be increasingly distraught, and pleaded with British Prime Minister Tony Blair to draw back British troops from Baghdad - a demand of the kidnappers. On November 16 her captors announced they had killed her, and released a video that they said showed her execution. US and Iraqi authorities later confirmed that Margaret Hassan had been killed. Cash in US dollars was handed to militiamen after they turned in rocket propelled grenades and other weapons. Police said the rates ranged from five US dollars for a hand grenade to one-thousand US dollars for a heavy-calibre machine gun. But an Iraqi official said the militiamen were receiving cash as a "reward for their cooperation", not as compensation for the weapons turned in, and that some had refused to be paid. In return for taking back control of al-Mahdi militia areas, the government promised to start releasing detained al-Sadr followers, provided they didn't commit crimes, and to spend 500 million US dollars to rebuild Sadr City after the fighting. The ICDC soldiers were on their way home when they were ambushed and killed about sundown Saturday on a road south of Baqouba, near the Iranian border. A government spokesman said the soldiers had been training in Kirkush military camp in Baladruz. Iraq's economy is dominated by the oil sector, which has provided about 95% of foreign exchange earnings in modern times. In the 1980s, financial problems caused by massive expenditures in the eight-year war with Iran and damage to oil export facilities by Iran led the government to implement austerity measures, borrow heavily, and later reschedule foreign debt payments; Iraq suffered economic losses of at least $80 billion from the war. After the end of hostilities, in 1988, oil exports gradually increased with the construction of new pipelines and restoration of damaged facilities.

Since mid-2009, oil export earnings have returned to levels seen before Operation New Dawn and government revenues have rebounded, along with global oil prices. In 2011 Baghdad probably will increase oil exports above the current level of 1,900,000 ssr软伀下载 m3) per day as a result of new contracts with international oil companies, but is likely to fall short of the 比SSR好用的软伀 m3) per day it is forecasting in its budget. Iraq's recent contracts with major oil companies have the potential to greatly expand oil revenues, but Iraq will need to upgrade its oil processing, pipeline, and export infrastructure to enable these deals to reach their potential.

The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or ssr软伀下载 (Arabic: الانتداب البريطاني على العراق‎ al-Intidāb al-Brīṭānī ‘Alá al-‘Irāq) was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed 比SSR好用的软伀, and enacted via the 1922 比SSR好用的软伀.

The civil government of postwar Iraq was headed originally by the High Commissioner, Sir Percy Cox, and his deputy, Colonel Arnold Wilson. British reprisals after the murder of a British officer in Najaf failed to restore order. The most striking problem facing the British was the growing anger of the nationalists, who continued to fight against the imposition of British authority. British administration had yet to be established in Iraqi Kurdistan.

Iraq/Kuwait - Saddam Retains Leadership

    Iraq/Kuwait - Saddam Retains Leadership

APTN Baghdad - 20 May 2003 Exterior of CARE offices in Baghdad Mid shot of Margaret Hassan, CARE's director in Iraq APTN Baghdad - 21 Oct 2004 Tahseen Ali Hassan, husband of kidnapped aid worker Margaret Hassan, speaking to journalists Mid shot of Tahseen Ali Hassan Followers of the rebel Shiite cleric radical cleric Moqtada al-Sadr trickled into police stations in Baghdad's Sadr City district to hand in weapons a deal seen as a key step toward ending weeks of fighting between US and Iraqi militiamen in the Shiite militant stronghold. Iraq war remembered: inside the surge with US troops

This report was first broadcast on 12 July 2007 It is the experience of the US troops which is turning American opinion against the conflict in Iraq. Channel 4 News gained an unprecedented insight into the dangers they face each day. Guardian photographer Sean Smith spent two months with US troops, following soldiers taking part in the surge and trying to contain the insurgency. The US administration claim the extra troops have brought some stability to Baghdad, but the city remains divided between Sunni and Shia communities. As a cameraman and stills photographer, his is an impressionistic view of war.

IRAQ: US LAUNCHES SERIES OF MILITARY STRIKES ON BAGHDAD

The first indication of the attack came when a barrage...

In a series o...

The Kingdom of Iraq under British Administration or Mandatory Iraq was created in 1921 following the 1920 Iraqi Revolt against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia, and enacted via the 1922 Anglo-Iraqi Treaty. Faisal ibn Husayn, who had been proclaimed King of Syria by a Syrian National Congress in Damascus in March 1920, was ejected by the French in July of the same year. Faisal was then granted by the British the territory of Iraq, to rule it as a kingdom, with the British Royal Air Force retaining certain military control, though de facto; the territory remained under British administration until 1932. A teenager suspected of wearing a suicide vest was arrested by Kurdish security forces in the city of Kirkuk on Sunday night. The vest was dismantled by the security forces, who removed it from his body in the middle of the street before arresting the teenager and driving him away in a police truck. Earlier in the day, another suicide bomber targeted the Jaafar Sadiq Shia shrine in Wasit neighbourhood, in an attack that left four people wounded after the bomber blew himself up. Although suspected of trying to target worshipers at the mosque, the assailant was prevented from entering and forced to detonate his vest at the gate as police were firing at him. For women in Iran, walking in public with their hair uncovered can be an act of protest. The women who don’t comply with the country's 1979 compulsory hijab law can face fines or jail time for the brazen act. And yet, a wave of hijab protests since January have shown women openly defying the law, filming public acts of unveiling that have been widely shared online. In response, the government has arrested at least 29 women; one has already been sentenced to two years in prison. As the Iranian women forge ahead, their acts of civil disobedience have been amplified by two social media accounts curated by Masih Alinejad, a Brooklyn-based Iranian activist and journalist living in exile. Her personal Instagram and "Stealthy Freedom" Facebook pages are the source of a host of civil disobedience campaigns, including #WhiteWednesdays, where women take off their headscarves and wave them. The encrypted messaging app Telegram, also popular in Iran, is currently the app of choice for Iranian women joining the hijab protests. Though it was recently restricted, joining Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, on a list of banned social media sites used to mobilize anti-government protests, the women are still bypassing internet censors to post their hijab-less images. VICE News spoke to Masih Alinejad about how the online protest movement gained momentum — and where it's going from here.

In 2011 Baghdad probably will increase oil exports above the current level of 1,900,000 bbl (300,000 m3) per day as a result of new contracts with international oil companies, but is likely to fall short of the 2,400,000 barrels (380,000 m3) per day it is forecasting in its budget. Iraq's recent contracts with major oil companies have the potential to greatly expand oil revenues, but Iraq will need to upgrade its oil processing, pipeline, and export infrastructure to enable these deals to reach their potential.
